Making a statement requires less fashion and more personality.
I remember several years ago the first time I pulled off a same-color outfit, and when my mom saw it, she said ‘oh, I like that! It’s matchy-matchy.’ I may have reflexively given her a Miranda Priestly stare because she asked ‘what?!?! - I said I like it.’ I replied, ‘I know Mom, but you said ‘matchy-matchy.’ It’s not matchy, it’s monochromatic.’ She chuckled, ‘well, excuuuuuse me.’ I laughed and headed to work.
When monochrome-wear became a huge trend, I could not help but appreciate the fashion industry’s move to more minimalist styling that I refer to as classical dressing. I was never one for trends and have always made it my business to collect pieces that will transcend ‘eras’ and still appear relevant even if I am the only one wearing it.
There is a kind of strength and power felt from wearing the same color from head to toe. It feels chic and you look ready to take on the world or at the very least, on your way to enjoy a nice brunch. I also suppose that in the absence of fancy trimmings and patterns, personality ultimately calls the shots. ■
